Arts Arts and More Arts

A little food for though... I cannot stress enough how important the arts are essential to us.

Marvin Bartel, a retired professor from Goshen College, Indiana has listed his reasons for having art in the schools:

A reason for art is to tell stories, events, myths, beliefs, and literature.
A reason for art is to convince, inform, inspire, criticize, persuade, make the world a better place (Guernica by Picasso - Faith Ringgold).
A reason for art is to perform rituals, work magic, pray for protection, pray of success, for fertility, for cures for sickness, for prosperity, etc. (tribal fetish art - modern advertising).
A reason for art is to enhance a religious ceremony (stained glass in Gothic church - tile of Mosque).
A reason for art is to help in meditation as in the contemplation of nature.
A reason for art is to create personal and group identity, inspire, school, cultural, and/or national identity, loyalty, and spirit (flags, mascots, logos).
A reason for art is to tell how people used to look and behave.
A reason for art is to tell us how places and things used to look.
A reason for art is to tell us how an artist feels about the subject of artwork (DeKooning - Wyeth).
A reason for art is to tell us the ways artists have found to express their creativity, and ways to interpret and represent what they have seen, imagined, remembered and felt (Bearden).
A reason for art is to a way to interpret our own emotions and understand ourselves better (Pollack - Frankenthaler).
A reason for art is to express and see dreams and fantasies (Mary Frank - Dali).
A reason for art is to reveal pure visual pleasure from the impact of color, shape, line, and other elements.
A reason for art is to design and create the tools, utensils, and other functional objects needed.
A reason for art is to embellish, decorate, and enrich objects and our surroundings.
A reason for art is to symbolize or substitute for a real idea or object.
A reason for art is memorialize or pay tribute to a person, persons, or event (Maya Lin).
A reason for art is provide therapy that helps the creator and/or the viewer better understand a problem and solution.
A reason for art is to help us pre visualize ideas for buildings, bridges, cities, and everything else that is imagined before it is made (Frank Gehry - Frank Lloyd Wright).
A reason for art is to add humor to our lives (James Melchert).
A reason for art is to create gifts that show love and other feelings to our friends and family (flowers and cards are commonly used this way).
A reason for art is to do pure visual research into the effects of color, line, and other elements as well as materials and processes (Joseph Albers).

Im Back!

Hey everyone! I'm still here! I missed you all! :) It has been a busy month let me tell you!

May 17, 2010 I graduated from Buffalo State College with a degree in Arts and Humanities. Who Hoo! Class of 2010! I will be attending Medaille College in the fall to start pursing my Masters in the Elementary Education Program specializing in Early Childhood and Literacy. I'm so excited! Early on I can remember sitting on the back steps of my grandmothers house handing out homework to my younger cousins, I always knew I wanted to be a teacher. The time has come :)

Dance Dance Dance...Recital time is here and I have been preparing my classes for their recital day, unfortunately I wont be attending their dress rehearsals because I will be in Albany for Pageant week but I'm preparing them to be confident and self sufficient. Yes!

Miss New York Preparation...workout sessions, talent practices and mock interviews have been flooding my schedule, I think of Alice and Wonderland and the bunny who says: No room no room no room! I have no room for sleep but it is worth it. "Anything good is not easy"

From my last post I had the opportunity to meet briefly with the Buffalo Public Schools Superintendent Dr. James Williams. I will meet with him tomorrow and propose ideas the Buffalo Public School District can use to incorporate the arts into education with the lack of arts funding. It can and will be done! The arts played a huge part in my development and everyone should be given the opportunity to experience it.

Ill let you know how everything goes tomorrow!

Smiles,
Chelsea

Highland Park Photo Shoot

This morning i woke up really early about 6:30 to be exact to get ready for my photo shoot as Miss Genesee Valley! Why so early you ask? Well I was really anxious to make sure everything was carefully planned out before the hour drive to Rochester and that my make-up was done perfectly and i didn't have to rush. I hate rushing! Did i mention my dog Hampton wakes me up early every morning! He's a annoyance and hes whining at me right now as i blog...he's spoiled. Any who while I'm doing my make up he chews my beloved make-up brush, i almost screamed. It was almost 8:20 by then so i hurried hopped in my car picked up my boyfriend and headed to Rochester. We arrived at Highland Park where we met Calista and John. The smell of Lilacs were breathtaking. Did i mention Highland Park hosts the Lilac Festival and the Lilacs bloomed early, good for us, not so good for the festival which will be held sometime next week until the 22 of May. The photo shoot went great! John Smilie, the Photographer took some great shots!

Leadership Institute

Yesterday i had the honor to share my story with the first graduating class of Just say Y.E.S. Network: Youth Empowerment for Success Leadership Institute. These Jr. High Students went through months of training in life skills and leadership workshops. The Erie County Chapter of the Links, Incorporated founded this program to help young people become assets to their communities and to become future leaders! Where was this program when i was growing up? Its a great start to the future of your youth! Dr. James Williams Buffalo's Superintendent of the Buffalo Public School system gave a inspiring charge to the graduates. After the graduation was over i mingled with the kids and parents congratulating them on their accomplishments. I met a few of the teachers who taught the leadership skills we shared a lot in common especially the fact Buffalo State College was their Alma Mater and soon to be mine. I also had the oppourtunity to speak with Dr. William's the Superintendent of BPS. I introduced myself asked if we could set up a meeting to talk about a proposal i would like to share with him about the lack of arts in the Buffalo Public School system. He willing agreed and i was thrilled! Stay tuned!

Research

April 30, 2009 i presented on research i have conducting for the past 6 months at Buffalo State's Student Research and Creativity Celebration. I presented on Anatomy and the effects Dance has on individuals. Since September i have been working with a group of students during a after school dance program that i teach. From my observation our young ones have horrible posture! Having scoliosis and a hyper extended back i have felt the effects of bad habits that should have been corrected in my youth. So i proposed this....if corrected early on the corrective exercises i have implemented in my dance program will strengthen muscles of the back and help slow the process of degeneration of the bones in the spine. (If alignment is severe)Pretty cool huh? I think so! I am having a great time conducting it, also i learned a thing or two from the chiropractor that helped to back my research. :)

ProLove Tour November 20th pt2

LOVE

Life is truly short. We we must live everyday like its our last, and LOVE one another. Since i have been teaching dance, this past year alone, i have lost two wonderful and talented children . These children have influenced my life, and each one of them i remember distinctivley with a story. One of the student had a illness that he continued to battle everyday, the last time i saw him, he wanted to participate in class but couldn't. I helped into a chair and pulled the chair into the studio where i was teaching. He watched his peers finish the routine. He was happy just being able to see how the final routine ended. Later that day he showed me a picture he drew of an angel and that was last day i saw him. At the age of 7 he passed away. Another student of mine could light up a room with his smile and optimism towards life. He made me smile each time i saw him, and boy did he have a personality. He grew up with an extensive background in the arts which bled through his charisma. Early September he was in a tragic car accident that took his life way to early at the age of 6. In his memory his family celebrated instead of mourning. Life is precious. Months later his father put together The Pro Love tour which was truly uplifting. The whole community came out to support here in Buffalo, NY. I put together a dance along with another friend of mine, and showcased how Asa took me to Higher Ground" Check it out. The clip is full of artist, im toward the end so be patient! Its only a snippet.

And the Winners Are...

Thanks to Amy Valenti ,Miss Finger Lakes 2010 here is the Crowning Moment!

Welcome! I'm so excited to share with you my journey as Miss Genesee Valley 2010.
The competition took place April 11, 2010 at Robert Wesleyan College in Rochester, NY. ( The neatest college campus i have ever been on) I had the opportunity to compete with 13 of the brightest ladies in the Western New York area. I am thrilled to be working with the Miss Greater Rochester Organization, Miss Greater Rochester herself Katie Martin, and my new ED Calista :) I am so thrilled and honored to represent Western New York. The Miss American Organization has helped to refine me and helped me along with other young women to become the best they can be. It was a amazing experience and new friendships emerged. Oh and thanks to Jennifer Starkey i left with a new nick name! :) "Buddha." After the pageant i was able to finally experience Dinosaur Barbecue... MMMMM! But as the Road to Miss New York begins, all the MMMM foods have to go, :/ as i prepare. Hope you enjoy the pictures!
